BME 310, Introduction to Biomedical Optics and Ultrasound
What light and sound do inside the body, and how an instrument turns that into a diagnosis. The course covers tissue optics, ultrasound and photoacoustics, how each interacts with living tissue, and where they are already used clinically for diagnosis and therapy.
Lectures run alongside small laboratory experiments, an imaging facility tour, and a final grant writeup and presentation on a subject the student chooses. MATLAB is used for the quantitative analysis. The recommended text is Bigio and Fantini, Quantitative Biomedical Optics. Prerequisite BME 271.
